Five Fun Facts about Rome
Five Fun Facts about Rome
- Rome’s Founding: Legend has it that Romulus founded Rome in 753 BC. Romulus and his twin brother Remus were fostered by a she-wolf when their parents abandoned them, according to legend. They argued on the name and location of the new city they intended to found as adults. Following a duel, Romulus killed Remus and went on to build Rome on the Palatine Hill.
- Most Travelled City: Rome receives the most tourists in Italy. Its historic sites were visited by more than 9 million tourists in 2019, more than Venice and Milan combined. After London and Paris, it is the third most visited city in Europe and, all things considered, the sixteenth most visited city worldwide.
- Age Difference:Rome is 2,500 years older than the Republic of Italy in terms of age. Italy was split up into several sovereign kingdoms for centuries until formally uniting as a single nation in 1861. However, Rome is older than Italy itself, having been built in 753 BC
- Capital of Italy:Rome was not always the capital of Italy, which is surprising. Following unification, Turin (1861–1865) and Florence (1865–1871) served as the capital cities. At last, Rome was recognized as Italy’s official capital in January 1871.
- Nicknames: Rome goes by a number of nicknames. The poet Tibullus first used the title “The Eternal City” (also known as Urbs Aeterna) in the first century BC. “Caput Mundi,” which translates as “Capital of the World,” is another moniker. Rome ruled over most of the known world at its heyday, as reflected in its name.
