Dream It – Travel It series 16 : Finding Home in a Foreign Land: Journey of Riya to Kyoto

Riya had always been drawn to Japanese culture—the tranquil gardens, cherry blossoms, and the serenity of ancient temples. But visiting Kyoto was never on her immediate travel list until a spontaneous decision changed everything.

A Journey of Discovery

When Riya landed in Kyoto, she felt an instant connection. The city’s blend of history and modernity fascinated her. From the bustling streets of Gion to the peaceful corridors of Kinkaku-ji, every place whispered stories of a bygone era.

One evening, while strolling through the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, she met an elderly tea master, Mr. Saito. Seeing her curiosity, he invited her to his traditional tea ceremony. As she sipped matcha in his 200-year-old home, Riya realized how travel wasn’t just about places—it was about people.

Moments of Transformation

Kyoto had a way of slowing down time. Watching the cherry blossoms fall like snowflakes at Maruyama Park, Riya found herself embracing stillness—something she had long forgotten in her busy life.

Visiting the Fushimi Inari Shrine, she walked through thousands of vermillion torii gates, each step leading her deeper into self-reflection. By the end of the path, she felt lighter, as if she had left her past worries behind.

Lessons from Kyoto

As she boarded her flight home, Kyoto’s lessons traveled with her. She realized that sometimes, the best way to find yourself is to get lost in a new world.
